The house was custom built by DUST, including its scoria walls, steel windows, and leather door handles. Its main feature is the zaguan, which is the open air space in the middle of the house. Its placement is hidden in Southern Arizona's San Rafael Valley, as the house blends into the desert landscape. |
In place of a hill of gravel and a small set of stairs, our studio was tasked with designing a replacement set of stairs across from the University College of Architecture. The current site is the intersection between the architecture, art, and music schools of the university, as well as is along a main access point for traffic in and out of the campus.

I proposed incorporating areas for movement and stasis, so that people can choose their path on the stairs. Not only are the seating areas wheelchair accessible, the "stair" theme among the benches tie the environment together. Trees incorporated into the site provide shade for bystanders or travelers, as well as add to the aesthetic of the space.

Our design communications class had the opportunity to work in the woodshop to build a stool. My intent was to create a bar stool with a built in area for knick-knacks and books. Over the course of a month, I went through the process of turning a 10 ft wooden board into a 2.5 ft stool. After cutting, adding box joints, adding biscuit joints, sanding, and assembling, I applied layers of teak oil finish to complete the project.

After this archival research, our project consisted of developing a library, or community resource center, in an empty parcel in Tucson, Arizona. As a cohort, we collected historical, social, cultural, and physical information about the site around our parcel in consideration. We used this data to create a physical site model.
